What Should Be Noticed When Using and Storing Propionyl Chloride? What Should Be Noticed When Using and Storing Propionyl Chloride?

Table of Content [Hide]

Propionyl chloride, used as the propionyl reagent in organic synthesis, is an intermediate for the preparation of various propionic acid derivatives, such as propiophenone. It can be used for the production of propanil; It is also used to produce the antiepileptic drugs like phenytoin, phenicol, and anti-adrenergic drugs like methoxylamine hydrochloride in the pharmaceutical industry.

Precautions for the operation of propionyl chloride:

Provide adequate local ventilation for the airtight operation. The operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by the operating rules. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter type respirators (full-facial mask), rubberized fabric toxicity-protection clothing, and oil-resistant rubber gloves. Keep away from fires and heat sources. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Avoid producing smoke. Prevent the release of smoke and steam into the air in the workplace. Avoid contacting with oxidants, alcohols, and alkaline. In particular, avoid propionyl chloride contact with water. Handle with care to prevent damage to the packing and container. The workplace should be equipped with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. Empty containers may retain harmful substances.

    Precautions for storing propionyl chloride:

Propionyl chloride should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated storehouse. Keep propionyl chloride away from fire and heat source. The storage temperature should not exceed 30℃. Keep the container sealed. It is forbidden to store it with oxidants, alcohols, alkaline, and food chemicals. It should not be preserved for too long to avoid deterioration. Explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities should be adopted. The use of mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to generate spark is prohibited. The storage area shall be equipped with emergency treatment equipment for leakage and appropriate containment materials.
